How does tuition assistance work?

Navy Tuition Assistance?

  • Do you get tuition assistance as soon as you pass A-school. Or do you have to wait for fiscal year. If so how does that work? How long do you have to wait? I graduate A-school around November-ish. I want to do online school on my free time after work to keep me constantly educated on new things. Help please.

  • Answer:

Navy standards are now you must be at your command 1 year before you can use Tuition Assistance. When you arrive you will not have much time because you need to get qualifications done first and this includes studying those books during your free time. You can also be on a ship that deploys and internet might not be a good option all the time depending on what command and where they are. The command can issue you the paperwork necessary to get TA sooner but will not do it right away. The TA is also limited to $4500 or 16 college credits per school year.

current regs are you may NOT get TA until you have been at your first duty station a full 12 months and have gotten approval from the CO. NOT fiscal year..calendar year you will have plenty to keep you occupied.. between mess cranking, getting qualified in your rating and working on your ESWS(or equivalent of you are in aviation or subs) there's plenty of education to be had.
