How will a general under honorable conditions army discharge affect the rest of my life?
-
I was always a good squared away soldier up until may, 2011. I had graduated from basic and AIT no problem and did and met all the requirements. I've scored high in my pt tests (270's) and gotten several good counseling statements for getting perfect scores on tests. On May 1st 2011 I got in an accident that killed my best friend and left his brother in a 2 week coma. I was pretty banged up after and came back to ft gordon where I was supposed to pcs that thursday, the 4th of may for benning in which I was to undergo Airborne and Ranger school. I was physically fit after about a week from when I got back and took 2 pt tests to clear me again so I could leave AIT. I failed the first one by 1 sit up but it was the 1st pt test i had ever failed and to be honest it wasnt really too comfortable to do situps after severe whiplash and contusions, or just being in that horrific accident. After passing the pt test the second time (a day later) I was then scheduled to leave the following thursday for my strenous training at benning but that tuesday 2 days prior to my alleged departure i was told i would be held back for a few weeks because I was flagged due to an ongoing investigation from the car accident. Bummer, big f ing let down. so after a few weeks of tac details and area beautifications, on the 20th of june my commander had told me that I was clear and good to go and that I would have my orders soon. That wednesday (23 jun) my roommate pcs'd to ft lewis and left an empty spice packet in my room. That friday i was held responsible for the spice that he had left and a few other soldiers in the company that had gottnen some from him also suffered. I received a company grade art. 15 for this. However my counseling statement/art 15 said nothing about spice since they couldn't find any (it's complicated), but they had to get me for something so they got me for being ftr a few weeks back. After this incident had blown over a few weeks later my orders where sent for again on the 29th of July. This is the only mistake I take full responsibility for. The next day saturday july 30th i had been drinking (i'm 19) and went back to the barracks and went to my room where I caught my dirtbag roommate doing some of his usual things (snorting pills) and we had a fallout. We started arguing back and forth then I started yelling at him for being a shitty roommate and never helping with anything. This is the type of guy that will watch me and my other roommate clean while he eats cheetos and wacthes us from his bunk. The type that spits dip juice on the toilet seat. The type that smokes in the bathroom when we're not supposed too and of course sniffing any kind of pill he can get his hands on. The funny thing is he's getting an honorable discharge for 'claiming' that he's crazy. Anyhow then the argument escalated and he left the room at this point I was enraged and through some chairs around in the room, little did I know he went to go grab the sgt on desk... The sgt saw me in this angry drunken state and called the mp's then I wwas arrested. To make a long story short, I got a field grade art. 15 for under age drinking and this is why i'm being chaptered out of the army. I had never learned this about myself until I started attending asap classes that I was a binge drinker on the weekends, it was a method of escapism for me from everything that had happened to me since the horrible accident in may. i have not gotten into any trouble since then and have been sober since, most of my instructors look at this as unfair and I have references from intructors and platoon sgts for when I get out to tell whomever needs to know what kind of a squared away soldier I really was. Anyways my plans are to re enlist in 6 months if and when I can I'd like to go to the marines or if not then the NG. I joined the army for 2 reasons, to go down range for the experience and money for college. And I still want them both. But if it's not available to me i'll progress onward from when I get out to the day I graduate college. Will going to college and obtaining a degree in a respectable field such as engineering or architecture help me in finding a job in the future??? I know that this is a bad stain on my life and resume and the only way of wiping and erasing it is re enlisting and completing a successful 3-4 year term to make my wrongs rights, but if I can't will going to college help me??? College was my plan since after high school but I didn't have the money and the football position didn't come with any monetary benefits other then acceptance to a prestigous school. Damn recruiter snagged me in the mall, thus here I am.....

Wow, what a long story kiddo. Anyway, life isn't over but be prepared for it to change, that's for sure. You will not ever have a job at the federal level with a discharge like that, that's for sure. You will not be in any other branch of the military, not NG, Navy, Marines, or Air force. To be honest after reading all that I would say that the military life just isn't for you, but that's only my opinion, so what do I know, right? However you will be able to get a job and a good one too, if you look, I would just leave out the part that I was in the military as your discharge papers will make you look like not a good choice for any job. You will not get any benefits i.e G.I bill that you would have gotten for an honarable discharge, but you can try financial aid and student loans, stick to school and graduate and things should be better. If your lucky enough to go before the review board it would behoove you to pull some tears from the bottom of your soul and beg them to let you stay in, as once they boot you out, whatever life was like for you BEFORE you joined that is what you will exactly be dealing with. Good luck and stop drinking it gets you nowhere.

Unless a employer wants to actually see your DD214 and knows what he is looking at no one will care. Your chance to reenlist are going to be slim to none. What is your RE code? Of course college will help you get a civilian job, colleges won't care about your military background.

Honestly, with so few people having been in the military, they probably won't even know what that means. Years ago when the WW2 generation was running things everyone knew if that was good or bad but today many or most people don't.
