What should I do with my life? Military and school, or work my way through college as a civilian?

Seeking advice from people who have gone through college, on their own or with help, and people who have served in the armed forces please. Summary: I can't afford to go to school for too much longer- I attend community college for now. I could join the military and go to school, or I could try to work full time and work my way through college. I feel obligated to help my younger brothers, who turn 18 soon and my father is abandoning them, but I need to pursue a higher education. The Spiel: I am a 21 year old man, but I am still very young and inexperienced with this world. I, like most people my age, find myself with little to no direction and less money. One thing I do have is the ambition to become a great man, and to complete my higher education- although in what field I still have not been able to really decide. I have been considering joining the military as a chance to see the world and pay for college, and it would provide me with many benefits that I see- moral structure, life experience that can not be found anywhere else really, travel (mostly stuck in a boat, right?), interesting career training and schooling (I would want to be a nuke in the Navy), as well as the pay and benefits that would provide my educational opportunities I desire. On the other hand, I feel like I can not or maybe do not want to abandon the people I have here at home. My friends and loved ones I could live away from and be fine, but my home life is strange: My younger brothers need to find a place to live, and I am the only one able to provide them with the opportunity to get an apartment together and make rent while still being able to go to school (all of us.) They are about to turn 18, and when that happens my father is going to kick them out and move away, so they will need support and whatever wisdom and advice I can offer, as well as familiar people around to help them etc. Not to mention I like the freedom of civilian life, and I am not sure how fun translates into military life, nor am I sure about opportunities to meet new people on more intimate levels when involved full time in military activities, but I do not think that means I would not enjoy a military lifestyle. Sorry, I like to write- Point being, it's been on my mind for a long time, and I have been trying to just work, but sometimes it feels like its going nowhere, and so will I. I love my brothers more than anything, but I also don't want to be stuck, ya know?

Answer:
I suggest you go enroll in a military school. The discipline and range of activities enable the students to come out of their shells. They are encouraged to participate in many things and so set goals which they strive to achieve. Character building is a mainstay of the school.

I can only speak from my own experience. When my father and uncles got back, they were entitled to down payment on homes, partial college tuition, and in NYC went to the head of the line for any licences & permits..... When me and my cousins got back, we got some tuition, prorated by time. The guys coming back now, get charged extra for their bags. If you sign up now, they'll probably make you buy your own fatigues.
It sounds like you are determined to lead a good life. Here is what happened to me. I was going to college in 2001 not really doing much but drink and get in trouble. After my 3rd dwi i realized that I needed a change in my life. I joined the Marines in may of 2002 and was in Iraq for the invasion in early 2003. The whole time I was in there I wanted out but when I finished I realized I had accomplished something that was amazing and that would stick with me the rest of my life. I continued to have drinking issues until 2008 and have know started going back to college and use the G.I. Bill to pay for school and ,make a little extra each month. I see that you are confuzed but you have to remember that the military is not the easiest life to live but will give you rewards for finishing. You need to sit down with the people you care about the most and listen to their input. But in the end you make the choice because you have to live with it. It was a very tough life for me but It has made me stronger since. If you are trying to just get money for college consider the reserves. Talk with a recruiter and see you options but remember they are salesman trying to get quotas so be carefull in what they tell you. it sounds like the Navy or Air Force would work for you. The Air Force would most Likley be you best bet for a career after the service. Hope this helps and best of luck
Look into the Reserves. I personally went Air Force Reserves so I'll tell you about that route. The Air Force Reserves sends you to basic training as well as technical school. While here you pick up 4 college credits as well as 12-22 credits during tech school. You will be stationed at a base in your local area, so you don't have to learn a whole new town. This will give you a taste of military life, which allows you to decide if you want to further it after college. The Reserves help you pay for college as well. They give a $300 a month stipend for classes, and you can also qualify for another $350 a month through a GI Bill kicker. After 90 days of active duty service (Basic training does NOT count toasted this time) you qualify for 40% of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Each additional 90 days is another 10%. So that means, 40% of tuition, 40% of an E-5 with dependants housing stipend, as well as $350 if you qualified for GI Bill kicker. It's somewhat the best of both worlds. It allows you to go to school full time (you work two days a month.) As well as help pay for that schooling, and let's you experience Military life.
