Navy RESERVE ! What are the perks, pay, and benefits ? - What is YOUR experience?
-
Hello, Im considering joining the Navy Reserve. I am a SENIOR in College, and I will be Graduating in TWO MONTHS !!! and I want something "long-term" and "STABLE", and it has always been my dream to go through the military experience. I don't want to fully give up my civilian life, but im a little skeptical about joinging somethiing for 8 YEARS. Any how, I am highly considering joining the Navy Reserve, and a recruiter will try to help me get into the Cryptology / Intelligence field. The only thing I am skeptical about is the money situation. I saw a military pay chart that said that basic "drilling" pay is only $196. If I make a 8 year commitment, I don't want to have to rely on that little amount for 8 years. However, I know that isn't the case with everyone and that is without bonuses and other things. So my question is . What, on average, to Reservist make a month (or every pay period)? What are the PERKS/benefits of being a Reservist (or active duty)? What was YOUR experience with the NAVY (active or reservist) ? Thank You *ALL ADVICE IS WELCOMED*

Answer:
you are expected to have a regular full time job over and above Drilling. Reserves is one weekend a month and 2 weeks a year.. and you are paid accordingly. you cannot xpect to make more than a couple hundred a month unless activated at least 30 days. you choose a job based on what the Unit you wish to drill at has. you must pay for Tricare Reserve Select if you want medical insurance. you do NOT get a housing allowance unless activated at least 30 days and otherwise meet the requirements.

Especially page 10 of 14 is where you will find info about what Reservists make during a drill weekend. All pay is based on rank and time in service. Reservists get limited benefits compared with Active duty, who get full medical and dental health benefits, living quarters (or money/BAH to pay for living off post), and educational benefits that differ from Reservists.
