I want to become a Navy fighter pilot?
-
I just finished junior year in high school. I may have made a mistake by accepting a recruiter's proposal. Is it a bad idea to enlist then work your way up to becoming an officer to meet the requirements to be a US Navy fighter pilot? I talked with my recruiter and I got too excited and I am signing up for enlisted for all these benefits he said he'd give me and I can become a fighter pilot after my bachelors... But then I find out online when I got home... I can graduate from a 4 year college and major in aviation nautical science and already be an officer and start attending flight school and I'll be a US Navy fighter pilot in no time.... DAMMIT I MESSED UP!!!!!! I feel like just breaking down and crying because I made a mistake, I want to be a pilot when I'm young not when I have to be near too old to fly. Did I make a mistake? I feel like I can't become a pilot anymore it was my dream and now I can't get it anymore....

Until you turn eighteen and raise your hand to take the Oath of Enlistment, you have time to back out of the deal. Just go back to his office and tell him Thanks but No Thanks. Dude, Ive Been Reading into Every branch, And asking Every Service Man on advice and How It all works Since freshman Year, Im now a Senior, and Im enlisted in the USMC. With That Said, you More than likely enlisted for 4/4 (4yrs Active 4yrs In active Reserve) Within Those 4 yrs, You can work to get your BA online, when you Have time, Which Im sure you'll find plenty of in the navy. You Could Do ROTC In College 1st, Finish College and be a CO as soon as You get your diploma, My x Gf Is Actually Going to the Naval Academy, She too wants to be a Pilot, But For the Marine Corps. Anyway, Dont Feel Bad, You didn't make a Bad choice, I enlisted 4yrs active, in which I plan to do at least 2 yrs worth of College, Which The GI Bill Pays for 100%. And When I Finish Those 4 yrs in the Corps, I Do 2yrs of College (For Free) And Then I Go back into the Corps as an Officer, Dont Worry About Being too Old to Fly, I Know Pilots who are 30+, Besides, you Get more Pay as an Officer who was once Enlisted. And if you go Straight to College w/out Atleast Being in The Reserves, Who Is Gonna Pay the College Bill? if you Have More Questions Feel Free to ask me, I think The only Mistake You did though, Was Signing up w The Navy, =p jk.
finish college FIRST. going enlisted then attempting to get a degree and commission is too long and is nowhere near a guarantee. since you have not shipped out yet you can still walk away from an enlistment contract. look at NROTC . But have a backup plan anyway.. less than half of the people that want to be Aviators actually meet the requirements.. and of them.. half will not complete the training.

Relax! You're just a junior and even though it might seem like FOREVER, trust me, it's not. You have plenty of time and you have actually done yourself a big favor. Do your enlistment, fulfill your obligation, and be the best sailor you can possibly be. Every time anyone asks, tell them you want to be an officer and do everything you can to prove that you are officer material. The important part is that when you are on active duty you can use your college money to get all of your "general ed" requirements like english and social studies out of the way. Then get out, and use your Montgomery GI Bill to attend an awesome aeronautics college with a great ROTC program. Work your butt off, because the top grades get first pick of aircraft. Then you will be an experienced sailor, a college graduate, have little to no college loan debt, and have a stack of recommendation letters from former commanders (remember how I told you to show them you're officer material). And who knows? You might decide flying is more boring than it sounds and find something better to do in the meantime.
