How is life as a corpsman in the navy? Will I be able to receive a nursing degree during my service?
-
I currently just got qualified as a HM corpsman. I haven't signed papers yet because I just want to get a better idea if it's worth it or not. I currently am en engaged. If I do enlist, will my soon to be husband be able to go with me? Will we have to live on base or could we live off base? Also biggest concern is I want to receive a nursing degree but due to financial issues I was told that the navy can help me. Is there a way to achieve my nursing degree during my service or must I do it after I completed my 5 years as active duty? Any former corpsman can give me advice or tell me their experiences? Thank you ^_^

Answer:
no way in hell can you get a BSN while serving AD. one you cannot begin classes until you have been at your first duty station a full 12 months and even then it will be one, maybe 2 classes at a time. and in no way can you get your Practicals done.

With Corpsman you can be stationed on a ship or at a clinic/hospital. Either one you will not be able to complete your Nursing degree while in. You could complete possibly an Associates depending on where you are stationed but you could not attend it Full Time especially when needing the hands on experience. Your service could count towards it in the end but not all of it. You are also limited with Tuition Assistance to $4500 or 16 college credits per year, anything beyond that is out of your own pocket. With the Navy they require you to be at your command 1 year before you can use the TA. For the GI Bill you cannot use it while AD until you have been in for 36 months. For being together you have to be married to qualify for him to be moved with you and you qualify for housing or housing allowance (BAH w/dependents). Then it will depend on where you are stationed, some locations are unaccompanied for up to 18 months, while others are accompanied. Where the best option is for housing depends on where you are stationed. Some places you can find a nice place out in town under the BAH and it will include your utilities. In other places it is better to live in housing. Not all housing is actually on base itself, most in the Navy is off base. When in housing it only comes with blinds on the windows, fridge, stove & dishwasher. You have to supply everything else including the washer & dryer (unless overseas). Also you are responsible for paying for cable, internet and phone out of pocket as usually all the BAH goes to the housing company.
I was a army medic, with a infantry unit, from the training, and experience, went to school, got my nursing degree, and past the state board exam. Work in a hospital, as a registered nurse ( one of the few male nurses there) outside Chicago. I make $32.00 an hour. Plus, night differential pay, and Sunday pay. On holidays, I make close to $70.00 an hour. Medical field is one of the best opportunities, as almost anywhere in the country, small towns, big cities, anywhere, medical field is a great career opportunity, it's needed everywhere. In a few years, plan is to save money, and move somewhere, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, somewhere, that's peaceful, great sceenery, and just a beautiful place to live,
GI bill or other things could help pay for nursing school. Depends on where ur stationed as to whether or not u'll have time for school. Advice: enlist, complete training, get stationed, work here for 1 year to acclimate urself to daily routine, THEN begin nursing school (probably at night). I was an 8404, now a RN taking advanced masters level courses, and I can attest to corpsman training. Get a BSN if can - and do it while ur young - u'll have plenty of time to 'party' after u graduate. Could be in navy nurse corps if get BSN.
