Do you think they will give me a chance?

Do you think the Marine Corps will even give me a chance?

  • Long story short, I was given an entry level separation from the Army about 2.5-3 years ago because I wasn't able to pass the BCT physical fitness test because of shoulder problems I "didn't have". The docs at Ft Benning had no idea what they were talking about because when I came home the civilian docs said I needed possible surgery and definite physical therapy due to a badly torn rotator cuff. I did PT nearly every day for 12 months and it healed fine. I went to school and have gotten my degree as a Nationally Registered Paramedic and even a few firefighter certifications. I can do 3 miles in about 21 minutes, 80 situps in 2 minutes, as well as 17 dead hang pulls. Pushups are fine too and no longer bother me. My shoulder hasn't given me any problems whatsoever but when I tried (re)enlisting in the Army, Navy, and Air Force the MEPS docs denied me without even hearing my case/looking at it in person/giving me a PFT. The Marine Corps said that they will give me a PFT sometime in January and send that down with all my med documents to get a waiver. They said the odds of me being approved drastically increase if I can show that I am in better shape than 90% of the recruits they're sending out, not to mention I have a degree that could very well save lives in a combat environment. SO what do you honestly think my odds are?

  • Answer:

It sounds like you have a great chance, esp. because you have a degree and the vast majority don't. Good luck!

What's your degree in? All you've mentioned is a bunch of certs. The National Registry is a certification test and not a degree. Some states don't even recognize it for their state exam. A torn rotator cuff is a serious injury even if repaired. Being able to do a little PT is very different than an actual work situation or in a physical event which is not so carefully planned out. Your attitude should also be an indication you are not a good fit for the military. I give your odds slim to none.

Have you seen Captain America? ANYONE CAN! :) Joking ^^^ But really, you're odds aren't the BEST but they aren't the WORST! You'll do fine :)
