Is boom operator a good job?

Picking a job in the Air Force?

  • So as of recently I am now physically qualified for the Air force, and will be signing my contract in a few weeks, maybe a month according to my recruiter. Now I made a 54 on my ASVAB so not too great. I want a job as a Boom Operator(refueling in-flight planes), but I realize in a branch like the Air Force you cant really be picky and I'm afraid if I do Open aptitude in General or even Mechanical or Electrical I'll get stuck with a job I don't like. And I definitely don't want to get stuck with Security Forces. My recruiter told me I should most likely go into Mechanical or Electrical because there isn't a lot of open jobs in General. So I guess my question to those of you wiser than me in this area is what are my options really? With my asvab scores can I pick a job, or am I destined to have to go to Open aptitude if I don't want to wait forever.

Your overall asvab score is meaningless. Without knowing your MAGE scores ( admin, mech, elect, general ) There is no way to answer this question. What jobs are offered when enlisting under an open contract, depends upon your mage score. So pretty much, if you do not have at least a 72 in elect, do NOT go open elect, because then there are only two or three AFSC's you can do. Mech, you would need at least a 60 to get a better chance of a good job. General, your gonna need a 70 to have a chance at one of the better jobs, you do not need it to qualify, but you need it to beat out everyone else. ALL job assignments are competitive !!!!!!!!!!! The person with the highest Mage score, gets assigned the AFSC first.
