What sports should I participate in during high school to prepare for the U.S. Military (Please Read Details)?
-
I'm entering high school this year, and I was wondering what sports I should participate in during high school to prepare me for a career in the U.S. Armed Forces, particularly the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps, athletically. Academically, I have a strong background, and during my freshman year, I am even taking an honors chemistry course designed for juniors. With that said, which sports from this list should I participate in during high school to prepare me to be a U.S. service member, particularly a Sailor in the U.S. Navy or a Marine in the U.S. Marine Corps? These sports are the only ones offered at my school. [Choose One Sport Per Season Only From This List (Assume you have equal or no experience in any of these sports)] Fall Sports Season - Cross Country - Soccer Winter Sports Season - Swimming - Basketball - Wrestling Spring Sports Season - Lacrosse - Tennis - Baseball - Golf Also, please explain why you would choose the specific combination?

Answer:
Cross country and swimming to improve your stamina because it will be a lot of physical work in the military.

If you want to be a Marine, you want to get into Cross Country to help you with endurance running. You will be running a whole lot in the Corps. Anything else is simply to keep you active. You don't need to be excessively buff and be able to lift all of this weight like some people think, but running is a big one.

for fall go with cross country for the endurance (be warned you will run up to 5 miles for a "warm up") wrestling for the hardcore lifting, conditioning, and it will help with you getting angry and fired up Lacrosse is intense and takes a lot of skill and stamina so it is a great choice. and In Maryland at least everyone loves a Lax Bro

Cross Country for the stamina, that is a big must. For winter I strongly recommend wrestling. Wrestling is in my opinion is the best all round conditioning sport in high school. Since your school doesn't offer track, I would recommend skipping a sport and participate in off season training or running.

At-least Cross Country [Fall] That WILL Help with any MOS for any branch of service. Also,Most High School JROTC's have a PT Team, thus mimicking the real deal, albeit very few emphasize it.

Wrestling would be the best because it focuses on weight training and cardio, but basketball would be good to

Hello Peter, I recommend Cross Country. Why? Because you are not going to play football or basketball for the Naval Academy at Annapolis. But, running is the Marine Corps' favorite exercise. So, if you can sustain a 3 mile run and have good running lets and stamina then that is the high school sport I would recommend. Semper Fi. Larry Smith Senior Master Sergeant, USAF (Ret.)
