What branch and job in the military would be best for a later career in Federal Law Enforcement?
-
I'm a college junior. My career goal is to become a Deputy US Marshal. I'm trying to get a really competetive internship that will pretty much guarantee me getting hired with the Marshals. If I don't get the internship, I've been considering joining the military because I've always wanted to and it would help me pursue my future career goals by making me a more marketable canditate for Federal Law Enforcement employment. Would any particular branch or job be best in pursuing this goal? Should I go for enlisted or officer? I'd have a Bachelor's degree by that point.

Answer:
If you join the Military, make sure you get your veterans preference with combat action. The biggest thing with working for the Federal Government is a Bachelors Degree in anything. I worked for the Treasury Department and the degree could be in Basket Weaving, but it got you more points. FYI no internship will get you hired by the Federal Government. You compete just like everyone else

Joining the military is a great thing and looks good on any resume. But for agencies like the Marchals just like the DEA and ATF they prefer hiring former cops with investigative experience (detectives) and law degrees. Military experience doesn't make or break a federal agent unlike experience and knowledge of federal law. In fact I know a friend of my family became a Marshal right out of college. If you do try to go right from military to federal LE try the Army and become a CID. They're enlisted men and former MPs that investigate crime for the Army. Unlike what the guy below me says your education does matter. It matters what you have your degree in. CJ is ok and can get you hired but highly unlikely especially for my agency and my sister agencies like the DEA or the FBI. Science degrees are the big thing right now, that's how I got my job. I'm going to law school next year so I can become a SA with my agency.
