My Chances of Becoming an Army Officer?
-
I am looking for advice any one can give to increase my chances of becoming and Army officer either through ROTC or West Point. I have wanted to become an Army officer since I was a little kid. I am a junior in high school entering my final quarter. I maintain a GPA of about 3.5 to 3.7 each quarter, but messed up my freshmen year. I have been on the wrestling team since sophomore year and will most likely be a captain next year. I have sadly not been involved in any school politics or done any extensive community service (yet). I am in decent physical shape. I can do about 80 push-ups, 12 pull ups, and run a 6:30 mile. I am working on my application for a congressional nomination and for west point and also for an ROTC. Chances of getting into West Point or getting an ROTC and becoming an officer? Any advice on what can help? Thank you in advance. ALSO... I was diagnosed with AD HD in the 8th grade. I took Ritalin for a couple of years and have now been off it for about 4 months. I will be clean of the drug for more than a year by the time I apply for ROTC or West Point, anyone know how this affects my chances?

Answer:
@ basscreator: West Point does not "push you up a little further". All graduates of West Point and ROTC come out as Second Lieutenants. For a good ROTC grad and a good West Point grad, there are no appreciable differences between the two. For example: of the last six Army Chiefs of Staff, three have been ROTC, three have been West Point.

If you have ever ADHD there is a chance they will DQ you. Sometimes you recruiter can request a waiver. Your fitness seems good. Did you graduate from college? To be an officer you need to be a college graduate. Good luck!

ADHD can be DQ, talk to your recruiter.

For ROTC your defiantly going to make it in because if you have higher than a 2.5 your going to get in. For west point, not so much. West point is almost as hard to get into as say stanford. 80 pushups is nearly twice the amount needed to make ROTC (44) so you will be able to make that. A 6:30 mile is amazing. ADHD is kind of a turn off for west point but ROTC doesn't care. I would try west point but no guarantees. For ROTC if you can get into college you can get into ROTC. Good luck!

Your chances of becoming an Army officer are excellent. It's a little difficult to predict chances at West Point with the information supplied. Act and Sat scores are a big factor with regard to academics. West Point is not only interested in school politics but also other non athletic extracurricular activities. Extensive community service is not needed. A good guide is the amount of community service required to join NHS. About 2/3 of each service academy class have been NHS members. The service academies consider NHS membership to be a leadership activity. The ritalin presents an issue since you have only been off four months. West Point and Rotc Scholarships are now open for applications and most members of congress stop accepting applications for a nomination by October. Waiting till November or December to apply for West Point and an Rotc Scholarship may lessen chances. A guy does not need an Rotc high school scholarship to commission through Rotc. The Army Rotc In College Scholarships are relatively easy to get compared to the four year high school scholarships. The selection process is nearly identical at West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy, so, whatever is stated on one service academy website or in its catalog with regard to admissions generally holds for the others. If you read the following answer and open the links it should help to explain the selection process and the path to an appointment: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Akhc017ydUhl4cmaSh5LBsHty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20101109140847AAZvjcJ The Air Force Academy website offers outstanding advice to students prepping for a service academy, rotc scholarship or any highly selective university. West Point is very hard to get in. Not only do you need a good GPA, but you need to take the ACT and or the SAT. They want to see high scores on those tests. ASVAB is another big test for them too. The want the best and brightest attending. My high school had a guy come from West Point every year to tell us what the requirements are and he would scout our JROTC cadets. We didn't have too many go. Obviously West Point is the harder, but more rewarding option, but ROTC will get you to be an officer just as quickly. Both are 4 year programs and both will ask to sign a contract with the Army after the end of your second year. So after 2 years be prepared to make your decision to join or not. I know the ROTC way will most likely make you a 2nd lieutenant at the end of it all. West Point may push you up further, but will definitely give you more opportunities. If you want to go to West Point you have to try your best. Go for a 4.0 GPA, take the ACT, the SAT, ASVAB and I'm guessing you're going through JROTC. JROTC helps A LOT. Start working hard now. Study for the tests and score high on them. Good Luck @MAJ BUTT I did not specifically say one would be pushed up in rank further. You just may be pushed up in to a better opportunity. I bet a West Point graduate will rank up faster with the right MOS. Please do list where I said it would push them up in rank. West Point graduates are going to be more successful than an average ROTC graduate. Don't make yourself look stupid by ranting and trying to argue on a site made for helping others. Grow up!

On having AD HD i am not sure if it will disqualify you but dont lot that scare you or stop you from achieving your dreams! Continue to get good grades in school and always challenge yourself. On getting into West Point it sure is a lot of competition my prior Command Sergeant Major's son got accepted and he went through everything juts trying to get excepted it didnt matter that his dad was a decorated Army Ranger with 24+ years. But continue to strive, the ROTC program is an excellent program as well. Just because you went ROTC and not West Point doesnt mean you wont become a good officer, you might be better! But my advice to you is dont pay attention to negative people around you and always follow your heart and dreams!
