What does an Animal Rights lawyer do?

What course of action can I take if I feel my rights were violated by police but can't afford a lawyer?

  • I was arrested for a misdemeanor at the Jacksonville International Airport in Duval County, Jacksonville, Florida. While I was still at the airport and being read my Miranda rights, I asked for a lawyer. I was told I'd get a lawyer once I got to the jail. Upon arriving at the jail, I asked for a lawyer again. I was told I would be able to call my lawyer after the booking process was complete. Two hours later, the booking process was complete and again, I asked for a lawyer. I was given a number to call for a lawyer or public defender, but was told that I was not allowed to use the phones until I got to my cell. By the time I got to my cell, the police guards had shut the phones off for the evening. I had horrible abdominal pain, as the jail would not allow me to take my medication, and was on the floor in pain begging to see a nurse when the pollice told me no. Again, I asked for a lawyer. They told me I had to wait until the phones were turned on in the morning to call an attorney. That morning, I asked for a lawyer again, and was told the phones would not be turned on until 9am. I had to appear in court at 8:30am, before the phones were ever turned on, without a lawyer or a public defender. I am not from Florida (I live in California) and have been laid off of work since this incident (so I'm poor now). I need to know if it seems that my rights were violated (many lawyers I've spoken with will say yes just because they want a case...I am looking for an honest answer) and where I could find cheaper than usual legal advice.

You need to seek legal council and present them with all the facts. If a lawyer really believes that you are entitled to damages then they should take the case on the contingency that if you win they take a piece of your award. If the lawyer is not willing to do this then the attorney does not truly believe in your case. I am just speculating here but I do not feel you have much of a case.

Contact the ACLU. They'll help you.

You have the right to a lawyer “You have the right to an attorney; if you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you free of charge.” “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right . . . to have the assistance of counsel for his defense,” -Sixth Amendment yes you're rights were violated.

go to internal affairs, and tell them your story and they will start an investigation on the police department, and on the officer that treated you wrongly. go to the closest public defenders office near you, more thn likely the FBI will look into to this if it turns out you are not the only person who has been wrongfully treated. If it turns out that the whole police station is as haness as the one you encountered then they will be shut down and ran by the state feds.

You can try writing a letter to a newspaper, or contacting a news agency. Sometimes they pick up stories like this that could help draw attention to your story. Someone's gonna have to give you some money for a lawyer eventually if you want to fight the police department. Are you sure you just don't want to let this one go? Having to spend the night in jail isn't really looked at as a big deal. You don't get a lawyer right away when you ask for one. They still have to book you and all of that. Sorry man.
