What would you do if you catch an employee stealing?

HELP My employee is stealing from me and my business. South Bend, IN?

  • OK I own a We Buy Gold business in South Bend, IN. I just found out a few days ago the manager of one of my shops has been stealing. I placed a tape recorder in the store and found out he has been buying gold for less than what he's writing down on the paperwork and pocketing the extra. He's also buying gold with his own money which he is selling to other shops in town. I have audio recordings of him paying less than his paperwork says as well as phone calls he's made to other gold stores in the area trying to sell the coins and gold he just bought. I also sent in a friend he did not know and he paid $400 for a ring and the paperwork says he paid $545. I've noticed a lot of the paperwork is missing from sales and sometimes he adds 2 or 3 different sales that happen all throughout the day into one transaction at the end of the night. He's required to fax all this paperwork into the local police station each night which he has been doing but with him falsifying information what do I do here? What all do I need to make sure he is arrested and prosecuted? I want him to go to jail for this. Is there anyway I can set him up with a high dollar sale like $2000+ to make sure he is arrested? Or would that be entrapment? I want all the evidence I can get against him before I bring this up to the police to cover my butt but I don't want them coming back on me for taking too long. He's not only stealing from me he's stealing from the customers who bring their gold in to sell. We require a valid picture ID for each sale as well as a thumbprint but with him doctoring all the paperwork nothing is really 100% true now. What are my options and what suggestions do you have for busting this guy? I have a spy pen camera so I can easily have someone video tape a transaction if this is needed. Plus all the audio I already have.

I would call a non emergency police number and describe to them what has happened up to this point. They will have the best advice.

You need to review the laws in your state, your audio recordings might not be legal

Excuse Me

Call the police and show them your evidence.

Gather all proof. Call the police. Speak to a lawyer. You should be paid back.

Get some legal advise to help you with this case. Sometimes unfortunately the scale of employee theft can get rather high. Next time, instead of dealing with consequences, preventing such cases should become a priority. One way to prevent employees from stealing is to monitor their activity. You can install a monitoring application on their work phones (make sure to set up some written agreements that they are aware of such actions). This way you will be able to view all their activity during work: who they called, who called them, read texts, emails, see their physical location on the map. Here where you can find an example of such software: http://www.mspy.com/c/y
