Can I sue DIRECTV for charging me for services they don't provide me with?
-
I have had DIRECTV for over 5 years now. In 2008, I got an HD receiver for "free" because I needed to replace one of my old ones. I didn't care for the HD service, so they sent me the receiver without HD access. They never charged me the usual $10.00 fee for HD Access (because I don't have HD channels), until March 2011. I called to have them credit the amount they took without my authorization, and the supervisors says she can't do that. She says if I have an HD receiver, then I will be charged the HD Access fee. Keep in mind, that I don't even get HD channels on this receiver. Now, I am $50 short, and if I want to replace the HD receiver with a regular receiver, I have to pay close to $70 to have them ship the regular receiver. This is the second time DIRECTV adds HD Access to my bill without my authorization, and the first time they corrected their error. They took off the HD Access charge, and credited my account. I cancelled my HD receiver because I refuse to pay for a service I don't receive or even agreed to. Can I sue DIRECTV for charging me for services they never provided me with?

I just have to ask why would you get an HD receiver if you didn't want HD? You understand an HD receiver costs more per month than an SD receiver (which is how they can make HD "free"). You can sue as long as the amount is over $20. But legal fees would probably make it a waste of your time and money because it would cost more than you would win (unless you sued for legal fees too). Don't worry. Dish Network and DirecTV are both bad. They are both owned by the same company. One screws you over so you switch to the other then they screw you etc etc. It's all just one big scheme to make money. Personally I like DirecTV better. Dish wanted to charge me $400 to upgrade 2 SD receivers to new SD receivers. WTF?!
