  There are literally VOLUMES written about this specific aspect of copyright law. You might initially consider researching the statutory rules that mention "educational use", including exemptions in 17 USC § 107 and § 110. Note that many "limitations" and exemptions include educational use without saying it in so many words. For instance, taking photos of an architected building, visible to the public, is not an infringement of the copyrighted architecture, regardless of what you're using it for.
