Is it illegal to TRY but FAIL to access someone's email and Facebook accounts?
-
I know it's against the law, but about an hour and a half ago someone I know tried to sign into my Facebook account. I tried to sign in on my phone and Facebook said that my account has been blocked because someone tried to access my account at 07:14 (I guess that's American time- about 11 Syd time) with an unfamiliar device and or location near Sunbury, AU. I then had to change my password. About 15 minutes ago, I went to sign into my Hotmail account and it said you cannot be signed in as your account has temporarily been locked due to attempted unauthorized access! I had to reset my password AGAIN and I also changed my security questions and answers to be sure. I don't think they managed to gain access, but I was wondering, is it still a crime in Australia to ATTEMPT to? If so, what can I do? Will the Police fine them? Do they spend time in gaol? I am extremely annoyed at this and livered at the person who I believe did it. (an old 'friend' who recently tried to get together with me but I refused. His wife also messaged me on Facebook tonight asking what was going on with us [nothing])

Answer:
firstly, no, it's not illegal to attempt to do this. secondly, even if it was, you would have to prove that whoever you thought did it actually did it before anything could be done about it. sorry, i know this sucks, but the only real things you can do is change your password often and make sure your computer doesn't have a keylogger on it, which would make it possible for hackers to get your password and steal your accounts.

If your smart, you will stop accessing facebook until, you make sure everything is working again. I know people who got hacked bc,they FORGOT to log out.I know this bc,I hacked into someones account for FUN..and boy was it entertainment. is easy to guess psw as long you know there mothers middle name and school stuff and fave pets.I mean it does not take a genius. First of all, closed fb for a while like 2 weeks if you can leave without it..bc,they WILL try again, and NO the cops can't do nothing until you have EVIDENCE of the CRIME.
If you could for a second get a law enforcement official interested enough to try and find out WHO did it, you might have a case; but no success, no loss, no financial harm, no up front certain proof of who did it..... I'd tighten up my security and passwords and fuggedabout it
