Is downloading music illegal?

I just got a call listed as unknown telling me I've been downloading illegal music?

  • Ok...I just received a phone call from an unknown number with a recording telling me I've been downloading illegal music? Then it says I owe some amount of money and then goes on to tell me to leave a recording giving my case or something so I wont be sued? WTH....was this for real or some bogus thing?

  • Answer:

It's a scam. No other reason. I could see their saying that you have been 'illegally' downloadiang music... but not that you have been 'downloading illegal music' It's a scam Next they'lll be asking for your credit card number If this were legit, you would be notified, but N O T by a recording. It's a scam. If the calls continue, record them....

Sure sounds like a scam to me. Since a lot of people illegally download music, they are just guessing and trying to scare you. No legitimate government or police agency would just demand that you pay them something like that, they would file charges against you. And they would leave a call-back number so you could verify their identity. I would ignore it, personally. No one can prove that you even got this message.

no its not real it is some jerk trying to get money off of you. ANY LEGITIMATE AGENCY WOULDN'T CALL YOU, they would send you an affidavit or come talk to you.

Hey! I am pretty sure it is a prank call from one of your friends. If the FBI really wanted to call you, they would from one of their numbers, or they would personally come to your house. Just ignore it, and you can't get into trouble. Meanwhile, stop downloading illegal music! lol

If it was an unknown number, the caller declined to identify themselves, and are just making broad accusations, then more than likely it is either a prank call by one of your friends. The RIAA and MPAA expressly stated about a year ago that they are no longer going to seek civil penalties against people who upload and download music illegally. Instead they are going to go after the person's ISP and try to have their Internet cut off, but they will not be sued. I know you are young and you get worked up easily over things, but just try to calm down and think about how ridiculous all of your worries are. A company would not use an unknown number and then just leave general accusations on an answering machine. They are not the mafia. If it was from you ISP, they would identify themselves as your ISP, tell you exactly what you were doing, and state what the repercussions would be if you did not stop. They would not call you giggling in the background saying very general things that could apply to almost anyone. Also, if it was legitimate, they would also probably send you a certified letter in the mail stating all of this and not a phone call.

More than likely its real. My sister was called by her internet company and they shut off her service. After talking with them they turned it back on but they are monitoring her closely.

Don't listen to it, you are not required to respond to unknown entities. Gov agencies are responsible for addressing citizens via Due Process, and no other means. It could be a serial killer, stalker or some fringe group that is trying to buy their way into your life. There is some evidence even gov offices attempt to coerce citizens into various "groups" for the purpose of entertaining their time and establishing a relationship. If someone calls you on your phone and you don't know who they are--they can say anything they want to and you don't have to comply with their demands. Don't listen to them, just hang up. You are not obligated to cooperate with persons you do not know regardless of who they claim to be.
