Why is it that when people get in a car crash the first thing they claim is that they hurt thier neck?

My wife was rear ended, and seven months later she is still in pain and seeing a doctor along with a physical therapist. Fortunately she was wearing a seat belt.

Two reasons One is that the spine and neck are quite delicate to trauma such as crashes. Your bones won't break without contact with a hard object, your spine can be wrenched out of place much easier. Once damaged, unlike a broken bone, they do not heal well and as such are difficult to put an exact dollar amount on. the second reason is that such injuries are difficult to disprove.

Such a claim is NOT usually made "first thing" because soft tissue injuries caused by sudden deceleration (whiplash) are the most common type of injury in a collision, but often those injuries do not become symptomatic for a day or so.

Because that's what usually gets hurt. The seatbelt restrains your body but not your head. Your head is heavy. It often keeps going when the car stops suddenly. As soon as it can't go farther anymore, it usually swings back. This can strain the neck muscles. Are you familiar with whiplash? It's a big ouch.

Because it is a "soft tissue injury" and hard to prove or disprove with medical tests. People might really have been hurt, or they may just be looking for money.
