How can I change a letter in my first name in California?
-
I just want to change one letter in my first name, but can I do that without a court order? I want it legal, so I can use my first name spelled the way I want on everything from my school name to a passport.

Answer:
You can do it unofficially by just using your spelling the way you want, but your birth certificate will always have the original spelling. If you filed for a court order, it would cost you perhaps around $500 for the filing fee and newspaper publishing fees, but you would get a new b.c.
