How would you report threats to the police?

I have filed a police report from threats and harassment, now if they assault me can I ... ?

  • They have been threatening me with texts and such and even came to my house... I filed a police report because I don't want any assaults on my record. Now my only question is if they attack me can I fight back without getting in trouble?

  • Answer:

If you are attacked, you can always defend yourself. Filing a report means nothing, other than that the police may respond more quickly if you call and tell them something is happening. You right to self defense does not require that anyone know in advance. In fact, the fact you filed the report could raise questions about your own preplanning of the incident. You are required in any self defense situation to avoid the threat if reasonably possible. So agreeing to meet them in a dark alley, for instance, will not allow you to claim self defense, not matter WHAT you told the police.
