How To Edit My Photos With Celebrities Online?

Is it illegal to edit photos of celebrities, so that they're doing something else than what they were doing?

  • For instance, Hulk Hogan hitting a dog with a chair when he was really hitting the Macho Man with it?

  • Answer:

It depends. Likely, the only things you could potentially be liable for are intentional infliction of emotional distress or defamation. Public figures cannot sue for emotional distress (see US Supreme Court case of Hustler Magazine v Jerry Falwell--485 U.S. 46 1988), so you should be fine there. To be liable for defamation, you must be aware that the message is untrue, intend to defame the subject, and actually damage the subject's reputation as a result of the message. Most likely you will not be doing any actual damage to the reputation, and even if you do, if your intent is to entertain rather than to defame, you should be alright.

That depends on what you're trying to accomplish with the photo. If you're using it for entertainment purposes or for a school project or etc. then I believe it should be fine. However if you are publishing it in any way shape or form, with intent to defame (damage the reputation of) said icon, then yes it is illegal. However, note that I am not a lawyer, and therefore you may wish to further consult a professional.
