What do you think about a flatter, more simple tax system?
-
I say have only one tax- a sales tax at about 20%. That way people only work one day out of a 5 day work week to pay for govenment services and everybody gets chaged the same PERCENTAGE (not the same amount as the wealthy will still be paying more with a flat tax). That way the rich don't pay 35% and the poor pay %10 like the current federal income tax scale. Eliminate property tax, eliminate income tax, eliminate the estate tax, eliminate all other taxes, no more FCC charge on your phone bill, no more 911 service fee on your phone bill, no more toll road charge, no more state tax, no more junk food tax, no more car registration fees, no more driver's license fees, no more civil/criminal fines. The only way the goverment gets your money is through this sales tax, one rate for everybody, that is equality, no need to fill out your tax paperwork every year, there is no paperwork for the individual, no more April 15th deadline. No need for the IRS. And if the government isn't going to have enough money just taking sales tax, then start slashing government departments and agencies because people shouldn't have to work more than 1 day out of their work week for the government as a matter of principal. What say you???

Answer:
It's actually an idea that many are behind. We should all pay SALES or USE taxes, not taxes on income. We have a really high sales tax in Washington State, but zero state income tax. Frankly, I prefer that, because if you do the math, the citizen comes out less taxed by a 'use' tax like a sales tax. Add the fact that most foods aren't taxed and it's win-win... of course, everything costs more on the left coast, so if we had an income tax, it would be unbearably expensive.

Your math is off. In reality, that means that the poor who spend most of their money getting by will have most of the tax burden put on them, while the rich who consume much less than their wealth would end up paying much less in taxes than what they are worth. There is a reason why sales taxes are called regressive taxes. There is even the question as whether such a tax scheme would even sustain our current budget. Until someone does the calculations for it, there is no way to tell. Finally, there is the issue of rewarding certain behaviors that help us all out. Sometimes we need tax incentives to get people to do good like donate to charities, or make their home energy efficient. With your tax system, this would no longer be possible.
That would never work, a lot of countries have similar ideas, but they are more like 35-45% tax not 20%.
Interesting; and unrelistic.
