If you had to choose between a cop or paramedic/firefighter.?

  • Im a little confused about what I want to do. I want to be a cop because id like to become a detective. But id also like to be a firefighter. Does anyone know what career is better?

  • Answer:

Paramedic/Firefighter. Being a Police Officer is unarguably the most stressful job in all of America.

Im gonna be a firefighter!! :D. But if you want good money, become a detective, if you want a fun job, Firefighter. Detective is filled with paper work and assholes. Firefighters are saving people, not hindering them

Cops and detectives spend their lives interacting intentionally with criminals and other morons. FF/EMS spend their lives helping save people and property from accidental incidents (usually) and often have very little interaction with the public at large. Police have lots of paperwork and detectives have a lot of desk time, often have others second-guessing their tactical decisions. FF/EMS work is very physical, extremely dangerous.

both are respected professions and are filled with good hard working people but sometimes you might hear about a bad cop you never hear about a bad firefighter. paramedics and firefighters are always saving lives . Even if they are good police officers they are not always treated with respect from the people they come in contact with but everyone respects paramedics and firefighters.

To bad you don't list where you live. Here in California there are (I believe) 2 cities that do both. One is Sunnyvale. Instead of a police or fire department they have a Department of Public Safety. Officers do double duty. Part time they work as police officers and part of the time they are firefighters. After 2 years, they have the option of picking one or the other if they want. If you're not around there, then look around your state/area and see if maybe one of your local communities might do the same thing.

Ask yourself these questions: Which one can I picture myself doing when I'm 45 years old? Which one would I stick with even if I didn't get the promotions I wanted? Then go find out what percent of cops become detectives. I'm guessing it's not many. If you think you have what it takes, go for it but first get as much information about both careers as you can.

Don't be a cop or detective. Go fight some fires and help the injured.
