How do I contest a ticket and win in Virginia court?

• About a month ago I was pulled over and given a ticket for "disregarding a red light". The problem is, I didn't run the light. Fortunately, I have an eye witness, my friend who was driving directly behind me, to prove I didn't. I decided to contest the ticket in court, as I refuse to pay for something that I did not do. I have never contested a ticket before and am nervous about doing this and throwing myself at the mercy of the judge. I would hate to go through the trouble to contest this ticket only for the judge to force me to pay more fines, if they feel I am guilty. Please tell me how do these court cases usually go and give any advice you can to help me prepare for and win this case.Thank you.
