What types of lawyers are there?

  • I have looked up many things and can not find anything that tells me the types of lawyers and what exactly they do. I am thinking about working as a lawyer for companies but I dont seem to know the name of it?

    From a lawyer. There are two main categories of lawyers, civil and criminal. Criminal lawyers defend those accused of a crime and prosecutor's present the government's case against the accused. Civil lawyers can simply be divided into transactional lawyers and litigators. Transactions include wills, trusts, contracts, patents, copyrights, corporate law, etc. Litigators include divorce, personal injury, estate litigation and other types of cases involving court work. Many lawyers do both litigation and transactions. Most law school graduates do not practice law but work for the government or corporations in other capacities such as management, sales, public relations and just about all jobs that a BBA would do. An old saying: "Law students who make A's end of being professors, B students end up being litigators and C students end up being politicians." Oh yeah, lawyers who work for a corporation are called House Counsel.

when you go to law school, you learn some basic things regarding the law. the legal education for the first year is the same at every school top rank with the bottom, with some exceptions. law school is 3 yrs and some schools have a part time program which is 4 years. most traditional schools good and bad do not let you take a class one at time. the larger the school the more classes offered. yet your primary focus will be to think like a lawyer, write like a lawyer. what u are asking about is specialties, get the basics 1st.
