    1) Like the Florida orange growers co-op, the California Almond Growers association, OPEC, etc. its main purpose is to unify a particular group of people into an economic bargaining unit. The union negotiates both wages and working conditions for its members. 2A) Benefits to union members: training through apprenticeship, continuing skills training to keep up with the technological advancements of the trade, 30% higher pay than non-union workers, better benefits than my non-union brothers. Representation in disputes with my employer over pay, raises, travel expenses, wrongful termination, etc. 2B) Free (to me) training for my employees, guaranteed workers with the job skills I need. Having some rational person to talk to when my employees feel I'm mistreating them. replacement workers only a phone call away if an employee quits. 3) Competition is always a threat, foreign and domestic. Both sides need to be flexible to meet changing conditions. And both sides need to have a cooperative attitude.

Originally unions were formed to protect workers. People were working long hours in dangerous jobs with little pay. Now, laws have been passed to protect workers, thanks to the unions. However, the unions still persist, and in some cases, they fleece companies and workers of any money they can get. I have personally seen union workers say that they dont have to do their job because the union says they dont, or that they can miss as much work as they want because the union protects them. And this is a Maine State DOE employee.
