Am I eligible for unemployment benefits?

Would I be eligible for NYS Unemployment benefits with this scenario?

  • Work for a bank, been here for 5 years. I work PT (5 days a week 30hrs) and make only around 300 before taxes and benefits and 205 a week after taxes and benefits. The reason I believe I will be fired is because my bank is merging with another and we have to go to a 2 1/2 day training session. This was not my agreed upon schedule as I have college classes every day and would not be able to attend this training session. I gave them the week I was to be on spring break and I was still not scheduled during that time frame. So now that I can definitely not do this 2 1/2 training, I expect to be fired.... Would I be eligible for unemployment?

yes probably, if they knew your schedule ahead of time and agreed to it. if you get fired go to the website to register, it's free obviously and takes about 5 minutes, it will tell you if you are eligible and it doesn't hurt anything to try even if in the end you arn't.

Fired for cause. Nope.

First there is no such thing as "fired for cause" regarding unemployment. If you are discharged in the end you would have to begin with exactly why the employer says you were discharged. If your schedule was agreed on previously you need to notify your supervisor and HR in writing. You should ask for accommodations or a solution instead of waiting to be discharged. If you are discharged due to 1 incident and have not had any prior warnings recently then you would most likely be qualified for benefits.
