How to address a resume with several jobs?

Why am I not getting contacted, hired, or talked to about jobs? Background checks?

  • I have applied to about 15 different locations are the Boston metro area and have not received one call or one email. I am not sure what the problem is. Could this be issue: 1.) I have been arrested twice (but, never convicted) 2.) I put jobs that I was paid "under the table" on my resume` 3.) I put down my current address in Boston, MA because I recently moved rather than my permanent address is CA. Looking for help. Should I not include jobs paid under the table? Should I put down my permanent address in California rather than my address here in MA? Or is it because I put down my (415) cell phone number rather than a 617 (boston). HELP!

  • Answer:

If all your experience is in CA, and your cell number is CA, they'll think you're in CA. At least change your cell number to Boston, and state in your cover letter you've moved back to MA and are looking for a permanent job.

Other answers

1. If you have not been convicted, you should be fine. All convictions of any type will appear in the background check. 2. "Under the table" is not legal, if the employer you listed verifies your employment status with him/her they are subject to fines and jail time 3. You are making it difficult to contact you.

It is a sign of our times that when a company advertises just in once in Sunday classifieds with a fax number -- they get upwards of 3,000 resumes. I mean people with scant connections to the listed qualifications are faxing. Furthermore, it takes four or five styles of resumes, which becomes a major headache keeping it all straight, but it has to be done. It IS a f**king numbers game. Go to the library or a bookstore with a coffeeshop, read up on books that talk resumes. Drive around town and cold call at places you think would be interesting and ask the front desk if you could fill out a job app. Leave your resume on top. Study up on the styles of resume. That will answer your quesiton about "under the table" but you could probably word that different. Good luck. I passed out 3,000 resumes in 19 months and I hate my job.
