(1) i want to find a waitress, or sales lady job (part time only, the wages i earn will not be high), i dont want to bother to do interview at job centre (government office) to get an national insurance number, is it a must to get that number? (2) if i dont have the number, is it illegal to work in the uk? (3) if i dont have the number, will any employer hire me? (4) what are the differences between having an national insurance number and without? (5) if i dont mind paying more tax and have no tax allowance, is it ok not to get a number? (5B) what is an emergency tax ? (6) someone told me if no number, the tax office would assume i have to pay tax even i only earn the minimum wage, is it correct? they say something like''''''''less than annual salary of 5000 pounds no need to pay tax..............--i have no clue about what it is. (7) if i tell the employer my wage is too low , so no need to pay tax, i should initially claim the overpaid tax to the tax office (cos my wage is too low and no need to pay tax , less than 5000 pounds) in next year???????? (8) what is tax allowance? (9) how much is it? (10) what authorities web site i can get the correct answer to all my questions? I asked different locals, all have different answers. I phoned the office for booking appointment to the Job centre for the national insurance number, the staff told me it is legal to work in the uk without an national insurance number, true? (11) what personal details would the job centre keep in their computer record ? is it confidential and would not give to other parties even other government departments? (12) if i am employed, my employer will give what kind of my personal details to the government departments and which departments? (13) if i apply for a job, does you employer have the right to have a photocopy of my passport? (14) Actually i know nothing the tax thing, system for an employee, please tell me everything about it. The above things i wrote here were all heard from some british locals and from my school staff, i dont know how truth it is and want to know the exact relationship about -- if one works in this country, what he must do to the tax department, and what is the tax percentage and if not do, what happen? (15) please answer point by point here to make me easier to understand since i am not a native english speaker. (16) I am not a british citizen, but i am an EU citizen, is there any differences in about the tax issue and national insurance number issue? Yes, no NI [National Insurance Number] = no job. National Insurance Numbers are given out by the UK.gov DWP - Department of Work and Pensions. Visit their site below for more information regarding NI number etc. http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/benefits/ni_number.asp
National Insurance Number tracks you and identifies that you are a Briton and that you are eligible for free treatment on the NHS should something happen.
it is necessary to have EITHER an NI number or have a work visa to apply for a job here in the UK for any job i also believe that you need it for any decent paying cash in hand job
if you do not have a national insurance number you run the risk of working and not receiving ANY money as you cannot have any rights to complain. Many illegals get paid about £10 a day for working a 10 hour day.If you are a EU citizen you can get a national insurance numberand thus work in a secure environment You will be paid tax free if you earn less than £100 per week
Your NI number is similar to the social security number in the U.S. as it seems it does the same thing. It tracks your earnings and identifies you for background checks. I admit that I do not like to give my SSN but know I have to because it is part of working.
