Would Thomas Jefferson approve of our current US tax system?

  • There are so many types of taxes in our current tax system that didn't even exists during the post-Revolutionary period when the founding fathers were around. I would think that someone like Jefferson would look at our tax system and explain how it is far too complicated, seeing as how he favored a simplistic system of finance...and let's face it: our tax system is anything but simple. What do you think?

  • Answer:

Jefferson favored a different model "legislators cannot invent too many devices for subdividing property, only taking care to let their subdivisions go hand in hand with the natural affections of the human mind. The descent of property of every kind therefore to all the children, or to all the brothers and sisters, or other relations in equal degree is a politic measure, and a practicable one. Another means of silently lessening the inequality of property is to exempt all from taxation below a certain point, and to tax the higher portions of property in geometrical progression as they rise." -- Thomas Jefferson; from letter to James Madison, (Oct. 28, 1785)

Please do ask the question WE are taxed, but are we REPRESENTED? The founders of the U.S.A. cited taxation without representation as one of the reasons for declaring independence from Mad King George. I think that any of the founders, would consider the system at present, an abomination! its a sick sad world!

Jefferson would disagree
