What is a "no-kill" shelter?

Staying at a youth shelter?

  • Decided to recategorize this because i wasnt getting any answers I'm 16 years old. Last week my dad threw a knife at me and assaulted me. I tryed running to the door and my mom was blocking it. I called 911. they charged him with assault with a knife he had to spend the night in jail and now hes living with my aunt and uncle. my mom and my 20 year old sister have been treating me very differently since this has happened, saying this was the worst thing i could have ever done and that ive messdd up our family and im too over emotional. the next day my mother also took away my phone, the one i used to call 911, the number the police noted down in case they wanted to contact me. I've also been very pressured to talk to my dad, both by my mom, my sister and my extended family. Since i was feeling like no one could help me, i talked to my school guidance consuller. We called a few hotlines and found out my options. i have a meeting scheduled later this week. ONe of the services i called was peel victims services, who are suppposed to call after every domestic abuse case but since my phone was taken away i dont think they were able to contact me. I'm exloring my options. I live in the peel region, in teh city of mississauga, in ontario. One option they did mention was signing up for subsized housing. I would be given money by the government and my own place to stay ( i didnt know that after the age of 16, i could legally move out). Since i am a victim of domestic abuse, my case would have higher priority however i am told the wait can still take months. i have thought about going to a youth shelter. there is one in mississauga called our place peel. I have a part time job, working about 10 hours a week. i thnk if living at the shelter can give me a place to stay and warm meals, i can afford to buy a bus pass (my school is pretty far from the shelter) and be able to save up for a prepaid phone. however what worries me is at our place peel, the average stay time is 3 weeks. online it says there are 2 our place peel locations, one in mississauga and one in brampton. the one in mississauga is an emergency youth shelter where one can stay for up to 3 weeks. teh one in brampton is a semi independent living program. one can stay at this location for up to a year. onine it said the cost for this was $300 a month, but over the phone as i was talking to the hotlne they told me i have to stay in the emergency shelter to be considered for the independent living program in the brampton our place peel. so my real question is if i go to this emergency youth shelter, what will happen to me after 3 weeks? will they find me another place to stay? will i get accepted into our place peel brampton? or will i have to choose between living on the street and going back home? and no, i do not have any family or friends i can stay with permenantly. also i am in twelfth grade, my grades are good and was planning on moving out after highschool and going to a university. also what are the conditions usually at a youth shelter? do you get your own room? is it clean for the most part? safe?

  • Answer:

Go to the shelter. They are generally safe and clean - as for your own room I don't know how that works its different at each place. Talk to them about the semi independent living area - that will work until you go to university - pick one that has housing...
