What's the process of changing my child's last name when I get married?

  • I will be getting married to my (very wonderful) fiancee soon and I plan on changing my name to his. We have discussed adoption and it will happen but I dont want my daughter to have a different last name than mine for any period of time. There is no biological father on the birth certificate and he is not and never will be in the picture so that is not an issue. I want to know if it can be done the same way I would change mine or if I have to go through the courts.... I would like to know the process and the cost if anyone knows it. And if you know the process and cost of me changing my name that would be great too. Does my future husband have to adopt my daughter before a change can be made?

    I think he has to adopt her. Check with a lawyer. As far as you changing your name, all you have to do is go to the social security office with your marriage license and then go to the dmv.

Just use the name. As long as you're not committing fraud your not breaking any law. Change her name on school records, get her name changed on her social security card.

To adopt you would have to get permission from the biological father I think

Your fiance has to adopt in order for your daughter to have his name. At least that is the case in AZ. I don't know the costs though. Sorry

i think he does have to adopt her. My mom recently just got married so she has talked about this, although i dont want my name changed.
