Why not? Mom always told me to learn more than one language...Seriously, It can't hurt and if you are fluent, maybe you can use it/ sign for more money at work....translators are needed everywhere...

It's ultimately up to you. Learning sign language is a wonderful thing and completely worth the hard work it takes memorizing it. Learn one word a day for the first month. two words a day for the second, month, etc, and you'll be fluent in no time! I am friends with someone who is deaf and at first I just memorized the alphabet plus a few common words (and, you, me too, to, if, etc) and I kept expanding and I can now communicate with her pretty well.

ya just in case.

yes it would probably make it easier for the both of you. well that is if she knows sign language.

Yes! sign language is the best! especially when you have little kids. start teaching them sign when their born and they pick it up really easy

i <3 sign language!! sorry i had 2 say that first off. As a freshman next year im taking sign language as my class. But yes yes yes take it

Yes, by all means learn how to sign, it will be very handy in your life, but please learn how to talk normally, you can't use text shorthand when you sign.

Sure, go for it. It is said that ASL is the third most used language in America.

I would learn it more and here's why: I think it would be nice to have the ability to communicate with my friend who has loss of hearing (like your friend). Even though you may be better off then hers, it would be nice to communicate with her without yelling. It's also a thoughtful gesture as well. To be able to sign with her can be a personal way to communicate too. I wish you the best of luck -- considering sign language is really hard to learn...

I know someone who is deaf and I picked up a little sign language and it makes communicating a lot better. I just learned the alphabet and that helped a lot. I spell out words and she has taught me simple everyday words. It is not very hard to learn and is worth it, I promise! Here is a link for the alphabet: http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/sign-language-1.jpg There are also some good videos on sites like Youtube that will help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s7a4lSlnro&feature=related This video shows you J, K, and L and this user (expert village) has a series of informational videos to help you. There are a little childish in my opinion, but are extremely helpful. I hope I helped you in some way and good luck! ps. The book on sign language will help too because the person that I know learned many of her sign language skills from books.
