How to hand-wash padded bra?

How to hand-wash a bra?

  • I'm not supposed to wash my bra in a washing machine. They told me to hand-wash it. I went out last night and it smells like sweet alcohol. How to wash it by hand? What kind of soap do I use

  • Answer:

Unless your regular laundry detergent specifically states that it is not suitable for hand-washing...or the specific material that bra is constructed from, just put a little of the detergent into a bowl of hand hot water and pop the bra in. Give it a thorough but gentle rubbing in the water and allow the hot, soapy water to thoroughly penetrate the material. Rinse it well in clean water and under a running tap until the water runs clear of soap. Gently press as much excess water out of the bra as possible (you could gently wrap it in an old towel to do this, if you like) and then hang to dry. Usually the reason they say not to machine wash a bra is on account of the underwire, in case it becomes tangled in other laundry and gets deformed. The only other reason for hand washing would be if it's made from pure silk. Generally I find that putting the bra into a special lingerie bag to protect it and then popping in the machine works just fine for me! There are some special laundry detergents out there for silk and 'delicates' - Woolite would be one of these but they are pricey unless you really need them. I hope this helps some.

You keep the bra on and a nice gentleman like myself will wash it for you as long as you're over 18 and hot looking, i'll soap my hands up and give your bra a good hand wash while you still wearing it. Joking aside my wifes bras get thrown in the washing machine with the rest of the wash, it does no harm. Hand wash 1/3rd a cup of soap and keep the water at about 40 degrees, soak rinse in warm water then cold rinse for half an hour and hang to dry. I do all the washing in my house, take it from an expert if it smells clean then it is clean, anyway you only wear a bra for a day before changing it.

Hair shampoo, especially one with a citrus or floral scent, works well. Just add enough water to the sink to cover the garment, and about a teaspoon of shampoo. Soak it for a few minutes if you want, swish it around in the water, then rinse under the tap. Gently squeeze out the water and hang to dry. If you can hang it over a bathtub from a shower spout to drip dry, that's ideal - otherwise, blot the water out with a clean towel and hang up wherever it's convenient. Woolite also makes a liquid detergent for hand-washable garments, but it can be pricey. Good luck!
