Very bad pain in knee. Could this be floating knee caps? Should I see a doctor?

So for a few days now, the lower part of my knee will Hurt when I run walk jump on it or if I'm standing and I kinda lunge with that leg. I noticed at cheerleading it started hurting really bad and we only had 2 practices so far. Idk what can be causing this pain because I didn't do anything to it! It's like a sharp pain. My mom got me a knee brace but it won't help. Help me please? ): also if it helps, the pain is sometimes in both knees. Or just my left or just my right but usually it's normally my left an the pain is in my right

Answer:
Hi, I am a physical therapist. Knee pain can be associated with a number of issues including injuries, muscle imbalances, and lower extremity biomechanics. Some simple things you can do to help your knee pain includes using ice (10 minutes at a time), avoid any aggravating activities, and wear appropriate shoes. If the pain continues see an orthopedic doctor and see a physical therapist to evaluate the problem and specifically what the source of your symptoms may be. You mention you are a cheerleader so I'm guessing you are between 12 and 18. If you are a teenager, coupled with the symptoms you describe; I would bet you have Osgood Schlatter's Disease. The disease sounds worse than it is. If you have this then what is happening is your muscles and bones are growing faster than your tendons. It strikes about 10% of kids going through puberty. Some suffer worse than others but all eventually grow out of it. The only real concern is if you have this and continue to do strenuous exercise, you could damage the tendons so bad that they don't heal and grow properly; leading to life long knee problems. The next time you feel it getting sore, press on the area directly below the knee; where that knot is. If its sore and tender there, then that's Osgood Schlatter disease. Either way you really should let a doctor look at it and find out what is causing this; especially so if it's Osgood Schlatter Disease. And I would bet money that's what it is. Your symptoms are classic for it. Good luck, hope you feel better.
