Anxiety and panic attacks make me feel horrible...How can I get over my anxiety without medication? Advice?
-
I suffer from panic attacks and anxiety, but recently I've started feeling really depressed because of my anxiety issues. I don't want to take medication for it, as you have to end up relying on medication to get you better. I don't suffer terribly from anxiety, but I do get anxiety quite bad, so how do I get over it? I am unemployed and I don't have much of a social life, therefore this makes me feel slightly miserable to be honest. But I get anxiety and it makes me depressed to have anxiety and suffer from panic attacks. Sometimes I think "why me?" because it's horrible, but then there's not much I can do apart from not worry, but it's so hard to do that, especially with the way our economy is in the UK. Any advice?

Answer:
hi mate i know you dont want to take medication but i do advise you to, you dont have to take mind numbing strong ones my wife has suffered your problem for years and at the moment she is doing great, she is taking citalopram 20mg which are very weak but it has helped her if you are dead against them the only thing i can suggest is when you feel an attack coming on try and control your breathing by inhaling through your nose and exhale through your mouth slowly i do hope you will get better (which you will) to see my wife go through it is heartbreaking to watch, keep your chin up

Vitamin D deficiencies can make people have symptoms of being sick, and being depressed which is usually why people have Seasonal Affective Disorder. Try taking a Vitamin D supplement, or go tanning, although tanning isn't good for your skin.

I also suffer from anxiety so I get it.. The tightness of the chest, feel like you can't breath, feel like everything is closing in on you, the tingly sensation, hyperventilation, heart/chest/back pain, uncontrolable crying, and so much more I get it... But what helps me get through this is I tell myself that I'm okay it's going to take a while it won't be cured right then and there, it's going to be a everyday battle I'm still not over it I still get attacks and chest pain all that but what I remind myself is that no matter what you feel physically you're okay. You're not alone with this!! Try not to stress out so much and when ever you feel anxious stop and tell yourself you're okay.. Hehe you don't want to be young with grey hairs do you? I'm 16 and with the way I panic I'm sure I will!! Hehe take care(:

Baby steps my friend. You're not going to get out of this in a day or even a month. You're stuck in a rut and your brain is helping to keep you there by succumbing to all the stress in your life. However, if you work at it a little every day you can reverse this process and feel happy and confident again! Choose ONE of the following and start doing it. Don't consider it a thing you have to do, consider it something you are trying to make a part of who you are. When you feel confident, move on the something else on the list. -Eat well. Have a few pieces of fresh fruit every day, and a small amount of meat. Every meal should include at least two different vegetables (fruit works too). So if you're having steamed beans, add a handful of grape tomatoes to your plate as well. This will often trick you into eating almost twice as many vegetables! -Exercise. In order to keep yourself healthy you have to spend at least 30 minutes a day exercising. It doesn't have to be intense, it just has to be movement that gets your blood flowing faster. Walking, biking, and even doing household chores are a great way to get this time in every day. Try to make it a part of your day. Personally, I run/bike to work, which means I don't have to worry about going to the gym or anything like that. It's "automatic", so to speak. -Socialize. Humans are designed to live in tribes consisting of a few extended families, up to a few hundred people. If you don't have someone you can talk to you often internalize a lot of things going on in your life that are stressing you out. Just like monkey in the jungle we need someone to pick the bugs off our back every once in a while :). -Relax. You're not a machine, you're a human being. You need to rest and recuperate every single day. Not only do you need to sleep every single day you also need to put your *stress* to sleep every day. Learn to meditate. This is not religious or spooky, it's just a way to flush the stress hormones out of your system and allow you to calmly reflect on the present. Constantly worrying about the future or the past can do real damage to the way you think about things. -Work. I'm going to let you in on a secret that most people don't realize until they are older. Humans NEED to work. It is quite literally one of the requirements to being happy. If you don't work on something every day you feel like crap. You will start to look for self-approval somewhere else, and if you don't find it you'll start to really get down on yourself. There is no way around this. Not working is the basis of a lot of problems in the world- bullying and racism are done by people who are trying to seek approval within themselves because they don't have something they can use as a sense of accomplishment. Oh, and I don't mean work like a job or school or household chores. I mean anything that affects change on your environment. Building a model boat, reading a book, and even going for a walk are all "work" in the sense that they require conscious effort and result in a measurable change in you or your environment. find something you like to do that you can measure progress in and DO IT. Even if you quit half way through you'll still be better off. Often just starting a task is enough motivation to finish it, assuming you break it into tasks that are small enough to do in 50 minutes increments (the average attention span of an adult). And keep your chin up. This feeling will pass.
