How do I get rid of a hemorrhoid?

What do I do to get rid of a hemorrhoid?

  • I've never had one before so I'm not too sure how to approach it... Its external so do I use ointment or a pill? Do I have to see a doctor and get a prescription or is it just in the pharmacy at Shoppers Drug Mart? I honestly have no clue what to do! Thanks!

  • Answer:

If it is not too bad you can simply by an over the counter cream or ointment from your pharmacist. These contain an analgesic for the pain, and the cream version of some products contains moisturiser too. You should try to change your diet to include enough fibre to make your stools softer and easier to pass so that you don't strain on the toilet, which is a major cause of haemorrhoids. You should also drink plenty of water, as dehydration causes small hard stools which are difficult and painful to pass. You should wash the area very gently and keep it clean. If possible use moist toilet paper and clean yourself very carefully and gently to avoid breaking the skin and allowing germs to cause an infection. If your haemorrhoids become very large or painful you should see your doctor because occasionally surgery is necessary.
