How serious is brain swelling after a car accident?
-
A girl in my graduating class goes to bars often with a fake id and she was very drunk and ran into a car that was going the speed limit and she hit her face on the pavement. I guess she was in so much pain they endunced a coma and her brain kept swelling so they had to cut out parts of her brain because it was so damanged and to hopefully stop the swelling. Her nose is broken, her ribs, collar bone and something else but i forget.. So how terrible is it to have brain swelling? The doctors said her personality might be differnt after the accident. I feel terrible..

Answer:
The doctors will be monitoring the amount of swelling and the pressure in her brain. Without this information we cannot give an answer. She will have a long recovery ahead of her. She may regain near full function or stay in a near vegetative state. There is really no way to know at the beginning. It is a matter of waiting and seeing how the brain recovers. Young people tend to do better as they recover better than older people. The exact location of the swelling in the brain, the amount and any other brain injury (bleeding etc.) will determine her prognosis.

Brain swelling can be life-threatening. The skull doesn't allow the brain to swell so sometimes we have to remove a large piece of the skull to remove large blood clots, and allow the brain to swell more freely. A coma can be induced for several reasons, we know that it can lower swelling in the brain and can benefit the brain in other ways. As for long-term outcome, she might make a full recovery despite how critical she looks now. It's obviously hard to give you a better answer without knowing more about her injury. However, patients can make amazing recoveries from brain injuries. Sometimes they have to learn to talk, walk, etcetera, all over again. And I agree, there'll likely be a personality change. Once she's off the respirator and stable, she'll need to transfer to a facility specific to traumatic brain injury patients for intensive inpatient rehab. Maximum recovery can take 1-2yrs, but look out for some impressive improvement after a few months.
