What is a catheter? and is removal surgery dangerous?

i opened my dads mail today by accident -- we have the same name so it gets confusing -- his mail said that he was due for surgery to get a catheter removed from his prostate or something like that?? im scared because my dad didn't tell me he was getting surgery ... i don't know what that is or is it dangerous ??? like can he die??? please help
