Can you develope lactose intolerance all of a sudden?

Lactose Intolerance Help - My Food choices!?

  • hey all, so I've been diagnosed with lactose intolerance. I've changed my diet dramatically, but I know there are still some foods I'm eating that I don't even know have lactose in them. First question, does mayonaise and ranch have milk ingredients / lactose in them? Or like other sauces? I honestly have no idea. Also, what about meat? I hear that they put lactose in some meats to make them showy. How will i truly ever know if what I'm eating has lactose? Also, I heard that even bread has lactose, is this true?? So even when I want to go to subway the bread has lactose in it as well? If someone can answer about the sauces question as well as the bread question and maybe even let me know other random foods that most people 'wouldn't' think have milk ingredients or lactose and told me that would be awesome!

  • Answer:

Mayo and Ranch do have milk ingredients in them. However, there is non-dairy mayo available. There is Vegenaise (http://www.followyourheart.com/ ), which tastes similar to mayonnaise; there is also Nayonaise (http://www.nasoya.com/products/original-nayonaise/original.html ), which supposedly tastes more like Miracle Whip. I have yet to find a non-dairy Ranch dressing, BUT I have made one: http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=7099 Some other sauces may have lactose in them--Chances are very good that if it has milk, it has lactose, as lactose is a part of milk. Your best bet is to learn to read labels or ask questions at restaurants. I have never heard about them putting lactose into meat--May want to ask about that over in the Vegetarian and Vegan Food sub-category of Food and Drink. :) To truly know when you're eating lactose, just read labels. Like I said, if a product contains milk, chances are very good it contains lactose, unless it says "lactose free." Some breads do have lactose--Again, get used to reading labels. Most Subway breads are lactose-free. The only ones that have lactose in them are the flat bread, Italian Herbs and Cheese, Monterey Cheddar, and Parmesan Oregano. I cannot think of any foods that have lactose in them that are unusual--You're just going to have to learn to read labels. Though food companies have made it rather easy: If something contains milk, after the ingredient's list, typically bolded, it will say: "Contains: Milk." If you have other questions, feel free to drop me a line. :) Best of luck!

Lactaid Pills. Eat one with each meal and you can eat whatever you want. And unless you have really bad reactions, I think your over reacting a bit.

Lactose is an artifical sweetener most commonly found in milk. Mayonnaise and ranch most likely do have lactose in them - you'll have to check the ingredients list. Most times its kind of solidly stated that lactose not included. Buy lactaid or milk without lactose, there are many brands, ask your local grocery store merchandiser. Usually you could look up the brand and ask personal questions about this. Furthermore, small trace amounts of lactose could be mixed in bread for an added zing.
