How painful is scoliosis surgery and what's the aftermath of it?

14 year old with scoliosis...Please help....please?

  • So today i had my checkup and my doctor told me i had scoliosis and i will need an orthopedist to check it out and see. Im really scared i will need to wear a brace or have major surgery. IS this a possibility or would it need to be a major case? my doctor said it was slight but still im nervous. WHats gunna happen

  • Answer:

it is a possibilty. They don't operate unless the degree of the curve is more than 20 degrees, which you would have known about. I have slight scoliosis, never found it til I was 18, and I only wear a brace from a drug store when my back is hurting. It even goes under my shirt. I know of 2 other girls (also cheerleaders) who have scoliosis and they did have to wear a brace, but only at night. Those girls also knew they had it at a younger age than you and were still growing. So they might make you wear a brace at night til they are sure you are done growing. you can cover all of them with a shirt, so no one will have to know.

wow young to have this problem too, i was 15 when i found out i had scoliosis (its not as bad as some peoples) im now 16 and i have decided to have rods and pins in my back otherwise i will have breathing problems because i will get a hunchback.. im going that way at the moment. a back brace wont correct your spine perminantly but it would help your spine from not curving no more for a certain period of time. i think what would be best for you is to get surgery because this will help alot! it will make you stand and sit upright and not have a curve in your spine at all! you could possibly get terrible breathing problems and may crush your lungs if you dont get it done what i suggest is that you talk to drs and your family and see from their point of view what is best for you, after all its better to get it done now since you are young and not to leave it until its worse when you are much older and nobody can do a thing about it. i didnt mean to scare or worry you if i have but im only trying to help i wish you the very best and good luck with your decision xx

Try not to be too nervous. A brace isn't too noticeable (you may need to wear bigger shirt sizes though...I did). They are less noticeable than they were when I was 6 (I'm 19 now). And I had to wear a brace twice. For a while when I was 6, then when I was like 13 (I had surgery) And if they say you will need surgery, it is only to benefit you. I had surgery at 13 the straighten the curve in my spine. They used a surgical/medical grade steel rod (not that big) and used that with some bone to keep it in place. Surgery would probably make you taller than you already are (because your spine will be straight) and you might not grow as much after. I know I grew a few inches with my surgery but then didn't grow much more. But it depends on the kind of surgery and your personal situation. And if you do have surgery, you may not be allowed to do certain things after the surgery... even years later. I can't ski ever again because one serious fall or collision could mess up the work that was done.

If you are 14 and this is the first anyone has noticed that you have scoliosis, the odds are relatively low that you will need treatment. This is especially true if you have had most of your growth spurt already. Based on decades of experience, I can give you an educated guess that the odds are less than 10% that you will need a brace or surgery. Remember, this is just a guess. No one here has examined you.
