What should you do if you have extreme arthritis in your hands?

Can Rheumatoid Arthritis in the hands cause pain in other joints, too?

  • When a person has Rheumatoid Arthritis in their hands, and is experiencing a flare-up(or time of disease activity), is it normal for joints that do not have RA to be painful, stiff and to make cracking noises? I am mainly talking about the hips, ankles and shoulders. What would cause these other joints to become stiff, painful and to crack?

    Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. That is why it can attack many different joints at once. Osteoarthritis tends to be limited to specific joints that got too much wear and tear.

You can have osteoarthritis as well as rheumatoid- I have it that way, plus you can have fibromyalgia, or any other connective tissue disease that flares all at once. See a really GOOD rheumatologist!

Hi, I am a physical therapist. Arthritis can be caused by a number of factors including overuse, previous injury/trauma, and systemic diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis is an example of a systemic disease that affects multiple joints of the body. Osteoarthritis generally affects only one joint. One thing that has not been associated with arthritis is cracking of jonts. Treatment for arthitis can include medication, exercise, supplements, and dietary changes. Exercise is important as muscles act as shock absorbers thus strengthening exercises are important. Be careful with high impact exercises such as running or jumping.
