How long does it take to pass a kidney stone pregnant?

  • I am 27 weeks pregnant and Dr. said I had a kidney stone last week. It began hurting on Monday really bad, then passed it on Wednesday morning about 3am. I thought it was over but I began hurting again about 5 hours later the same way. The Dr assumes there is another stone based only on blood in urine(which I can't see), where the pain is, and that I already passed one. They cannot do xrays or ct scans b/c I'm pregnant and they say ultrasound didn't show anything(and the usually don't) The stabbing pain in left side comes and goes and when it comes its intense, 2 hydrocodene and it does nothing. I am drinking lots of water. Anyone have any advice on how long this could go on. I have to go back to work! It's been 11 days of this! Almost 7 days since the last stone.

  • Answer:

kidney problems from diabetes. Avoid sugar, sweet drinks and sweet food, get tested. Most stones are calcium. vinegar dissolves calcium. try Italian salad dressing, pickled vegetables or citrus fruit. Filter your drinking water.

Are you seeing a urologist? Maybe they can do lithotropy (ultrasonic stone break up) but maybe not. Sometimes the stone can be permanently in the kidney and never pass, then they have to take out the whole kidney if it gets that big. Hopefully they had you filter your urine to save the stone that passed and tested it to see what it was made of and how to prevent more of them. Often they are caused by taking calcium pills, so if you take calcium pills try to spread out smaller doses several times a day rather than taking one large dose once a day (ie 250mg four times a day rather than 1000mg once a day). There can be other causes as well, which is why they test them. Keep drinking lots of fluids/water. Pray. And have others pray for you. Usually they give demerol in the ER is what I heard. It is stronger than hydrocodone. There is no set time for a stone to pass, pregnant or no. Take out FMLA leave and use it a few days at a time to keep your job.

They CAN take a plain x-ray without contrast to see if there is still a stone or if the pain you are feeling is from the swelling that can occur after a stone is passed. If this pain continues, and you should be calling the doctor regularly if the pain continues, they may have to put in a stent to relieve the pain until after you deliver. This will relieve the intense pain and also protect the kidney function until delivery. You may want to see a urologist if you have not already.
