Am I lactose intolerant?

Am i lactose intolerant?

  • OK, so i was very sick with diarrhea for about three months strait (yea its messed up) and i went to the doctor a few times in those months, when i told her what was going on the first thing she asked me was, "are you lactose intolerant" i said no. nothing helped and so i decided to try not consuming dairy for a wile. sure enough after 3 months of non stop diarrhea, i was fine. i tested this by drinking milk and eating cheese. sure enough.. i exploded. i have used lactose pills before consuming dairy and have been fine....... in my mind i am 100% sure im lactose intolerant, but my dad does not believe me. he tries to scare me into doing things and told me that i might have worms and could get seriously "F"ed.... i haven't been sick in over a month now ( wile avoiding dairy/using lactose pills) and was wondering if i relay was lactose intolerant or if my dad was right. Thank you everyone!

People with lactose intolerance may feel uncomfortable 30 minutes to 2 hours after consuming milk and milk products. Symptoms range from mild to severe, based on the amount of lactose consumed and the amount a person can tolerate. Common symptoms include: •abdominal pain •abdominal bloating •gas •diarrhea •nausea Two tests are commonly used to measure the digestion of lactose. Hydrogen Breath Test. The person drinks a lactose-loaded beverage and then the breath is analyzed at regular intervals to measure the amount of hydrogen. Normally, very little hydrogen is detectable in the breath, but undigested lactose produces high levels of hydrogen. Smoking and some foods and medications may affect the accuracy of the results. People should check with their doctor about foods and medications that may interfere with test results. Stool Acidity Test. The stool acidity test is used for infants and young children to measure the amount of acid in the stool. Undigested lactose creates lactic acid and other fatty acids that can be detected in a stool sample. Glucose may also be present in the stool as a result of undigested lactose. Good luck!! Make sure to go to your doctor and tell them your findings. I've been fighting with docs for 7yrs to find out I may have celiac disease (gluten intolerance). If you are not persistant about finding out what is wrong they will shrug you off! Don't stop until you have solid answers. If you feel better without eating dairy, than dont. Do your research and find out what you can eat/drink to replace the nutrients your body needs from milk.

It sounds like you are definitely lactose intolerant. If you avoid dairy foods and no longer have problems with diarrhea then that should be enough proof for you. You can get tested for lactose intolerance, however I did the hydrogen breathe test and got a negative result. Yet whenever I eat dairy I get horrible cramps and diarrhea. It is possible to get a false negative on a test and you must keep that in mind if you go to the doctor. It does not sound like you have worms at all. Most humans become intolerant to lactose when they get older.

Your empirical testing has demonstrated quite clearly that you are lactose intolerant. Sounds like your dad is a bit of a worry wart. If the lactose pills help you, you'll be fine. Since you are lactose intolerant, you should try Lactaid milk. It's not gross bean juice like that soy stuff. It's normal milk with the lactose broken down into simpler sugars. It's sweeter because of that, and it lasts a really long time compared with normal milk. Also, eat all the cheddar cheese you want. The process of making milk into cheddar cheese breaks down the lactose, so it's lactose-free. If you eat cheddar and still get sick, you might have a milk allergy instead of lactose intolerance. Though then the pills wouldn't do you a lick of good, and you've already said that they work.

get checked for celiac disease and sprue. but your symptoms and self challenge suggest strongly lactose intolerance. if it was a parasite, milk would be of no consequence .
