Question regarding having high blood pressure?

Blood pressure question?

  • On my mother's side of the family almost everyone suffers from high blood pressure, my grandmother and an uncle recently passed away from high blood pressure complications. I, on the other hand, have had low blood pressure "episodes" (maybe 6 or 7) throughout my adult life, starting at about 22, with even some fainting. When I take my blood pressure it's usually on the lower side, around 106/68. My mother takes medication daily for her high blood pressure. My question is, what are that chances of someone from my background being hypotensive? Is it a phase or pretty much the way it will be for me, I am now 30 and a little overweight? Also, I have a blood pressure monitor at home, what is the best position and time to measure it? One other thing being raised the way I was, I still avoid salt. I walk my dogs for an hour everyday. Should I be concerned?

  • Answer:

I don't believe there are any guarantees. Given the family history, I would keep monitoring your blood pressure. Also, be careful about gaining weight. This makes the heart pump harder and raises blood pressure. I guess I would not be concerned, but don't be complacent, either.
