Hello Jessica, Empty stomach, digestive disorders like infection of the digestive tract, constipation and infection of the stomach are some digestion related problems that make up the second most common list of causes of halitosis. The usual suspects; alcohol, tobacco, onion, garlic and curry should be immediately put behind bars to test if they are the reasons of your bad breath. Brushing your tongue is as important as brushing your teeth. Our tongue also harbors plaque and regular removing of it is very important. Also, go for the toothpaste which is tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil based. While there are plenty of short-term products such as gums and fresheners on the market, most do not last more than a couple of hours and tend to only mask the bad breath rather than address underlying causes. For this reason, many people are now turning to natural herbal and homeopathic ingredients such as Kali. Phos, Silica and Sweet Fennel to successfully help them with halitosis. Kali. Phos is well known for its antiseptic and cleansing properties and is effective at addressing putrefactive conditions such as halitosis, foul smelling flatulence and stools. Silica works by cleansing the cells of toxins and ridding the body of bad odors, while addressing some of the underlying causes of bad breath such as gum disease, sinus infections and mouth abscess. Lastly, sweet fennel has a long history of use for treating digestion problems and is a popular aid to sweeten the breath. For more, you may also wish to check the link below.. Good Luck!

Hi Jessica, While it's true that often bad breath is caused by digestive disorders, it's more likely that you are not producing enough enzymes to complete digestion than that you are overproducing acid. If you don't get heartburn often, I would try enzymes from the health food store to help your stomach complete the digestive process. Undigested food laying in the stomach causes bad breath. So does not brushing your mouth/teeth thoroughly. In addition to brushing your teeth, your gums and tongue need brushing, as especially the tongue holds tons of bacteria. Mouth wash alone isn't enough. They need to be brushed first. If these things don't help you after a week or two, then see your doctor and ask for a physical.

There are a number of causes of bad breath, first one among them being bacteria in the mouth, stomach and intestinal disturbances, bowel sluggishness, sinus or throat infections, and tobacco and alcohol use. Since we all know that dehydration leads to constipation and digestive problems, it is very beneficial to drink 6-8 eight ounce glasses of water a day. Practicing good oral hygiene is always important. Although mouthwashes will solve some of the immediate problems, you must get at the root of the cause. You can also try using the product Dentiva, it not only freshens the breath by killing the bacteria that causes bad breath but also helps to prevent tooth decay and other gum diseases.

A common cause of bad breath is acid reflux (which could explain why you feel as though the odor is coming from your stomach). You should see a doctor, who will examine you and possibly prescribe an acid reducer like Nexium or Prevacid. There are also several OTC acid reducers, such as Zantac and Pepcid. You might also want to check with your dentist, because tooth decay can also be a source of bad breath.
