How to deal with my Kyphosis (Hunchback)?
-
I got this diagnosed about a year ago, along with my scoliosis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyphosis My kyphosis part, the hunchback part is about as bad as that picture, maybe a bit worse. It ranges in the 70 degrees each time I get my xray. I'm 16 years old, 6'1 and 130 lbs. I'm pretty skinny, and i just think it looks bad. I look in the mirror, and I just don't want to go out and swim. Swimming used to be my favorite thing to do. I usually wear hoodies, but I'm getting comfortable with wearing just normal tee shirts. It just bums me out.. I want to get a tan this summer, and swim and have fun. I want to get in shape and make my body look good, but what's the point if I don't feel comfortable with my shirt off? I'm just bummed. I don't really know. The person I go to, to get checked every 3 months says that It's not bad enough for surgery and I wouldn't want to do it for aesthetic reasons. I don't know if it's worth taking the risk of surgery. There's a 5% risk of complications apparently. And it's a big surgery, where they go in through the chest. I don't know if I could even do it if I wanted, unless the doctor signed off on it. And he doesn't think I should so I don't know. What are your thoughts on this? Anyone else have spinal problems? I'm just bummed out, because I had plans to get in shape, get a tan and everything else, but then I look in the mirror and I don't feel comfortable. Should I feel like this, or is it just stupid? Thanks

Answer:
Kypho-Scoliosis surgery is usually done after completion of growth or just before that. The curvature of spine is corrected by distraction compression rods on either side of spine. If the curve is very acute it may need second sitting although it is not practiced. This procedure limits the flexibility of spine to some extant. It have high complication rate that's why it usually advised if there is pain or other problem due to scoliosis. It is done by ortho surgeon specialising in spine surgery. The rehab usually take 3 months. This is the right age for surgery, you must get it done. 70 degree angle is quit high, it will lead to complications in future. have faith and go ahead.
