What are the chances of HIV being contracted from unwashed hands?
-
A friend came over to help me cook the other day but before we started cooking, she went to the bathroom. She previously attested to being on her period. It didn't register at first, but I don't think she washed her hands at all after she left the bathroom and started helping me cook. Because of what were were making, she dipped her hands a bowl of water that we had to dip the food in. So, in general, her hands got all over the food. Not only did I eat this food, but so did my family, and now I am beginning to freak out about the chances of HIV being spread. She once told me that she wasn't sure if she had HIV or not. I just need someone to calm me down - I am so terrified here haha... (Just for some more detail, she recently got her tonsils removed. Does that operation require blood tests or urine tests? She said something about a urine test. Would they be able to find any traces of it in those?)

Answer:
HIV is spread through bodily fluids such as those during sex or blood. It would be very unlikely for you and your family to contract HIV that way.

The HIV virus can be transmitted by unprotected sexual contact (vaginal, anal, or oral sex), sharing needles, transfused blood products, mother to newborn (30% risk), and occupational needlestick exposures. HIV is not an easy virus to pass from one person to another. It is not transmitted through food or air (for instance, by coughing or sneezing). There has never been a case where a person was infected by a household member, relative, co-worker, or friend through casual or everyday contact such as sharing eating utensils or bathroom facilities, or through hugging or kissing.
No risk at all, relax.
