HIV infection causes a seroconversion illness in at least 50-70% of people. This consists of all or some 0of the following: sore throat, fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, lethargy, & headache. This occurs 10-14 days after infection. It resolves in 7-10 days. There are then NO symptoms until the CD4 count drops to usually < 50. Then opportunic infections like PCP pneumonia, cytomegalovirus infection, toxoplasmosis infection, fungal meningitis and Kaposi's sarcoma develop. HIV is caused by a retrovirus
