Should HIV testing be required?

Does HIV testing take longer than STD testing?

  • So I got tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea yesterday along w/ HIV testing I got my results back Chlamydia & Gonorrhea both negative, but I have not got my results for the HIV testing yet!! Im so scared could this be because HIV testing takes a little bit longer? By the way I got tested at Kaiser & I am able to review my results online...

  • Answer:

HIV testing usually is sent out, at least at the hospital where I work. STDs can be checked right away for results.

From my experience generally HIV tests take a wile to do (although only 2 weeks max). HIV tests are usually done in pools. They generally pool 24 blood samples and then test the combined sample in an ELISA. If the pool is non reactive they associate all the samples as non-reactive. If the pool becomes reactive then they test all the individual samples. If any of the samples react they do a second ELISA. If the second ELISA is reactive they then do a western blot. All these steps generally take a lot of time. Also HIV tests generally have to be done at a provincial or state laboratory to ensure quality is maintained.

Yes its a blood test. All std and infection and bacteria tests are all diff and go under diff labs.So don't worry. My doc told me this the other day.Relax and breathe.Use condoms you want have a worry in the world. Also stick to one partner if you can best options.
